A bold declaration met a swift and gravelly end in the Formula Regional Oceania Trophy! Just moments before the race kicked off at Teretonga Park, one of the Red Bull juniors, caught on camera by presenter Greg Rust, confidently declared, “Just gonna send it.” Little did he know, those words would become a tragically ironic epitaph for his race. Starting from pole position, the promising young driver powered into the opening left-hand corner, only to experience a sudden spin that ended his race prematurely, just a few hundred meters after the start. His M2 Competition machine found a new, sandy home in the gravel trap.
But here's where it gets interesting: this unfortunate incident immediately propelled Freddie Slater into the lead. And Slater? He absolutely dominated the 25-lap race, leaving the competition in his wake. He masterfully managed the challenging conditions, with the track being described as wet and presenting a significant risk.
Slater’s victory was a commanding one, with the M2 driver leading a TGR Hitech trio of Jin Nakamura, Kalle Rovanpera, and Kanato Le across the finish line. For Kalle Rovanpera, a World Rally Championship (WRC) champion, this marked a significant milestone: his first podium in a single-seater car, surpassing his previous best of ninth place. Slater himself summed up the experience with pure exhilaration, stating, “That was probably the most fun I’ve had. A wet track on a track like that with so much risk, you’re just flirting with the limits the whole way around. It’s just good fun.”
And this is the part most people miss: the rest of the field also saw some notable performances. Australia’s Jack Taylor secured a strong fifth place, marking his best result of the season. Supercars star Ryan Wood made a solid climb, gaining two positions to finish seventh for MTEC Motorsport, just ahead of Kiwi Motorsport’s Cooper Shipman. The current points leader, Ugo Ugochukwu, came in eighth, followed by Fionn McLaughlin and Sebastian Manson.
There were other moments of drama too. Louis Sharp finished 11th, a lap down, after an unfortunate nose-to-tail incident that dislodged his front wing. New Zealand’s other contender, Zack Scoular, also found the gravel at the first turn, ending his race in 17th place after a spin. It seems that opening corner was a real hot spot, as Nolan Allaer also found himself beached in the gravel on the third-to-last lap.
Results for the Formula Regional Oceania Trophy Race 1 at Teretonga Park were as follows:

Now, I have to ask: is a confident pre-race declaration like “Just gonna send it” a sign of bold ambition or a harbinger of impending doom? What do you think? Let me know in the comments below!
