In the 80s and 90s, this observatory was the star of the show. Located just off Great Keppel Island, it attracted hundreds of tourists daily from Rockhampton. A Place of Emotion and Wonder:
Ms. Wedd shares a touching memory of a young man's ashes being laid to rest near the observatory. He had been captivated by the marine life and, after a tragic accident, his parents found solace in having his remains close to the place he loved. But that's not all—the observatory has a history of firsts. It was the largest in Australia when it opened in 1980 and the first to have a tourist shop underwater.
Engineering Marvel:
Built by a local engineering firm, the structure was a masterpiece. Filled with 500 tonnes of ballast, it was designed with an electrical current to prevent corrosion. It was then floated and sunk 6 meters below the surface, creating an artificial reef with a Taiwanese shipwreck. The 10-meter-wide building boasted 14 large windows, offering tourists breathtaking views of the marine life.

But all good things must come to an end. The observatory closed in 2008, along with the Great Keppel Island Resort. Now, only marine life and divers explore its depths.
