The Mariners' Dramatic Victory: A Spring Training Thriller
In a thrilling spring training game, the Mariners emerged victorious over the Guardians with an exciting 8-7 score. This recap might be a little delayed, but it's worth the wait, especially for those who missed the action-packed game.
I'm writing this from a cozy bar in Twin Falls, Idaho, on my way to spring training. Despite the game being televised, I chose to listen to it while navigating through the hilly terrain, which, let me tell you, is quite an adventure in itself! So, let's dive into the highlights of this back-and-forth battle.
Bryce Miller's Impressive Debut
Miller made his season debut and left an impression. He pitched 1.1 innings, striking out one batter with a pitch that had the broadcast crew debating whether it was a splitter or a curveball. His four-seam fastball reached an impressive 98.4 mph, but he also gave up a double. However, Miller's performance was solid, and his decision to opt for a gel injection instead of surgery for his bone spur seems to be paying off, as he's pain-free and ready to go.
WBC Stars Shine
Julio Rodríguez, who will soon join Team Dominican Republic, had a great game, including a double and two walks. Cal Raleigh, not to be outdone, contributed two doubles of his own. Randy Arozarena, another WBC participant, also added a double in a fun first inning where these talented players showcased their skills.
The Raley-Canzone Showdown
In one of the most intriguing position battles this spring, Luke Raley continues his impressive revenge tour. He added another hard-hit double, this time off former Mariner Matt Festa, with a scorching exit velocity of 109.8 mph. Dominic Canzone kept up with a line-drive single, showing his ability to fight off pitches.
Spring Training Standouts
Michael Arroyo, who's getting plenty of playing time at second base, collected two hits today, including his second double of the spring. He also demonstrated his knowledge of the strike zone by successfully challenging a call. Colt Emerson had a solid game too, with two hits, including a triple.
Brock Rodden's Blast
While I was driving through the mountains of eastern Oregon, Brock Rodden was making his mark with his first spring training home run. It was a well-timed ambush on a middle-middle cutter, and the fans are loving the healthy Brock Star's performance.
Bullpen Battles
Today's bullpen performance was a mixed bag. Abdiel Mendoza, a pitcher who might be a surprise to some, had a great outing, relieving Miller and finishing the second inning cleanly. Casey Legumina and Cooper Criswell also had solid performances, with Legumina striking out a batter in the fifth. Ryan Loutos struggled again, but Cole Wilcox's outing was particularly intriguing. Wilcox showed off his powerful stuff but needs to work on command, as he issued a free pass. It's an exciting development for the team.
As spring training nears its end for me, I'll be missing some of the WBC players, but there's still plenty to cover.
