Jon Jones predicts Gable Steveson's rapid rise to UFC stardom: 'This time next year, I could see it'
Jon Jones, a legendary figure in the MMA world, is not only preparing for his own potential retirement but also mentoring a rising star in the sport: Gable Steveson, an Olympic wrestling gold medalist and three-time NCAA champion. Steveson's journey into combat sports began in late 2025, and he's already making waves with an impressive 3-0 record in just three months, all achieved in the first round.
With a fight scheduled for February 19th in Monterrey, Mexico, Steveson's mentor, Jones, believes he could be a champion by this time next year. In an interview with Helen Yee, Jones expressed his awe at Steveson's dedication and discipline, stating, 'He’s unbelievable. He’s an unbelievable athlete, human being.'
Jones further highlighted Steveson's strengths, noting his exceptional grappling skills, unstoppable takedowns, and effective ground and pound. However, he also acknowledged that striking might be an area Steveson needs to improve, as it is currently considered his weakness. Despite this, Jones is confident that Steveson's overall abilities will make him a formidable force in the UFC.
The Contender Series, hosted by Dana White, has been a platform for emerging talent, and it's likely that Steveson's transition to the UFC will occur through this show. For now, Jones and Steveson are focusing on building Gable's skills and establishing him in the minor leagues, ensuring he is fully prepared for the challenges of the UFC.
Steveson's next challenge is an 11-3 heavyweight, Hugo "Pandemonium" Lezama, in Mexico. This fight will provide a valuable test for Steveson as he continues his ascent in the MMA world.
