David Spade believes that George Clooney may be stepping away from his role as a political commentator. This speculation comes after the recent announcement that the celebrated actor and director will be moving to France with his wife, Amal, and their two children. In a discussion on their podcast "Fly on the Wall," Spade and his co-host Dana Carvey contemplated whether this move signifies a shift in Clooney's engagement with American politics.
Spade remarked, "He has been vocal about political issues, which is completely fine, but I can’t help but wonder if he’ll continue to voice his opinions on politics while living in France. Just the other day, even after sharing his plans to move, it felt like he’s saying goodbye to the political stress of America. You know what I mean? He’s made his exit."
To illustrate his point, Spade likened the situation to a football player who leaves one team for another, explaining, "Imagine you’ve played for the Jets for two decades, and then you switch to the Steelers—would you still want to send plays to the Jets? The answer is probably no; you’re on a different team now."
Carvey chimed in, suggesting that Clooney might aim to decrease his public political presence because now his priority is his family: "I think he’s going to pull back and just focus on raising his kids. That’s what he wants right now."
Interestingly, Spade expressed his surprise at Clooney’s choice of France for relocation. He mused, "If he’s really bailing out, I would have assumed he’d pick Italy instead, considering he has spent so much time there over the last couple of decades."
George Clooney has been one of Hollywood’s most outspoken figures against former President Donald Trump, and he has also raised concerns regarding President Joe Biden’s cognitive abilities through a notable op-ed in the New York Times. Recently, Clooney and Trump exchanged jabs, particularly after Trump praised Clooney’s acquisition of French citizenship, branding it as "Good News!" but simultaneously criticized him for supporting Kamala Harris in the upcoming 2024 presidential race.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, "Good News! George and Amal Clooney, two of the worst political prognosticators of all time, have officially become citizens of France, which is unfortunately dealing with a significant crime problem due to their poor immigration policies, similar to what we experienced under Sleepy Joe Biden. Remember when Clooney abandoned Joe after that infamous debate during a fundraiser, only to back another candidate, Jamala(K!), who is now in a fierce competition against the worst governor in the Country, including Tim Waltz, Gavin Newsom, for the Democratic nomination?"
Trump further commented, "Clooney gained more publicity for his political views than he did for his few, rather mediocre films. He was never a true movie star; he was just an average guy constantly complaining about common sense in politics. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"
In response to Trump’s remarks, Clooney stated, "I completely agree with the current president. It is essential that we make America great again, starting this November."
