Australian Open 2026: Maddison Inglis' Unlikely Journey to the Fourth Round (2026)

Maddison Inglis is truly experiencing a remarkable journey as her more famous counterparts face immense challenges in the sweltering Melbourne heat during the Australian Open. On Saturday, top players like Jannik Sinner pushed through severe cramps, while Novak Djokovic narrowly avoided disqualification due to an incident involving a ballgirl. Stan Wawrinka made his final appearance at Melbourne Park, and Naomi Osaka withdrew just before her match due to an abdominal injury.

In stark contrast, Maddison Inglis, a relatively unknown qualifier aiming to break into the top 100 at the age of 28, found herself moving forward with relative ease. Following Osaka's withdrawal, Inglis advanced directly to the fourth round, where she will face the formidable No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek. This is particularly notable given that just a week earlier, Inglis had nearly faced elimination in the first round of qualifying, stating, "I was down two match points in that match. Tennis is pretty crazy like that."

Instead of a matchup between Inglis and Osaka, fans at Rod Laver Arena were treated to a doubles match featuring Inglis’s fiancé, Jason Kubler, and his partner Marc Polmans, who played against Jakub Paul and Marcus Willis. "They were super pumped when they found that out," Inglis said regarding the Australian duo’s participation. She added, "I’m going to go out and watch a little bit and then get some rest, because it has been a big couple of weeks."

Financially, this tournament has already proven to be a significant milestone for Inglis. Before arriving in Melbourne, her career earnings stood at approximately $2.1 million. Even if she had lost in the first round of qualifying against Spain's world No. 141 Leyre Romero Gormaz, she would have still taken home $40,500. With her advancement to the fourth round of the main draw, she is set to earn $480,000, which is nearly 25% of her total career earnings.

"The [ranking] points, the money, the experience, the fans, the courts that I’m getting to play on, it’s honestly unbelievable, it’s like a dream," Inglis expressed. "But yeah, that money is life-changing. When I saw the prize money for first-round qualifiers was forty grand, I was like, ‘whoa, that’s amazing’, so it’s unbelievable."

One of Inglis’s most challenging matches was against her fellow Australian and close friend Kimberly Birrell. After winning that emotionally charged first-round match, Inglis was seen crying on the court. Birrell, who, alongside Talia Gibson, progressed in the women's doubles by defeating second seeds Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini, also commented on their match. Despite Birrell being ranked almost 100 spots higher than Inglis, she emphasized that her friend rightly earned her place in the fourth round, saying, "She absolutely deserves to be in the fourth round, and she put herself in the situation. After the match, I was really happy for her and also to see her success. What’s happening tonight, I’m really excited for her."

Additionally, top-ranked Australian woman Maya Joint continued her tournament journey despite a disappointing first-round exit in singles. She and her partner Storm Hunter triumphed in their doubles match, overcoming the No. 7 seeds Aleksandra Krunic and Anna Danilina after a lengthy heat suspension. "I didn’t feel it [the heat] that much; I thought it was warm, but I didn’t think it was bad enough for it to be a heat delay," Joint remarked.

Their match concluded as dusk fell on court six, near the courtside bar, which would typically be bustling with activity. However, most fans had left the venue after the heat protocols caused a suspension of all matches on the outer courts. A few remained to witness the duo finish their match. "It was a bit of a strange one," Hunter reflected. "But I was really proud of the way that, when it was time to go, we were both ready to go."
